    The fundamental skills of badminton

    Style: Badminton Skills

    When playing badminton, the stance is what you do. This includes both before and after a serve. Easy movement will result in a more stable and consistent stance. There are three types:


    Attacking Stance:

    It's used to position yourself before performing an overhead forehand strike. Stand in the attacking position by placing your racket leg behind you and placing both of your legs shoulder-width apart. Now, lift both rackets as well as non-racket arms in order to unleash the power necessary to strike the shuttle down.

    Defensive Style:

    Prepare yourself with a defensive stance to defend your opponent's smash. Your body should be facing the net. Place your racket forward at about waist height. While the racket arm is not as comfortable, it will provide a better balance.


    Net Sance:

    This is your stance after a net shot. Play this shot by placing one foot forward on the racket and the other at the back. While raising the non-racket hand, place the racket in front and slightly above the waist. Move the racket forward slightly to allow you to charge forward.

    Footwork

    Badminton can only be played on a limited court. The athletes must take care of this while playing. A lot of footwork goes into ensuring that the court is well-organized and effective. Coaches even place footwork above other skills.


    Tips for proper footwork

    • Never forget the base (or starting point).

    • Move only 2-3 Steps back

    • Shuffle only 1 Step Sidewards

    • Move only 2-3 Steps forward


    Badminton requires that you master the basics of service. Legal service is also important to avoid any penalties.


    There are 2 types of badminton services, depending upon the landing goal of the shuttle.


    High-Serve

    High serve is directed at the back corner of the opponent’s court. The ideal high serve is one that causes the shuttle to drop steeply at the back end. Opponents who can execute a strong smash are entitled to a high serve. A properly executed high-serve can result in a lob or drop from your opponent.


    It is best to serve the shuttle towards the backhand of the opponent. This allows you to exploit your weaker backhand.


    Low Serve

    The low serve is different from the high serve. The aim is to allow the shuttle to fly just above the net landing at the front corner. Your opponent may try to ram the shuttle into you if your execution is not good.
